The Trend of Table Tennis Technology in The Future

what skills that you need to develop in playing table tennis

In 2021, if you want to improve table tennis skills, you must have basic table tennis skills techniques, such as serving, footwork drills, forehand, and backhand drive, loop, and flick. In addition, we should strengthen the exercises in the next few areas.

Speed first

Many fans know that table tennis has five elements: speed, strength, rotation, arc, and drop point. The five elements are mutually integrated and mutually check and balance each other, allowing the sport of table tennis to develop different styles of play, making the game exciting.

After undergoing the reform of inorganic glue and the use of 40+ new material balls, the speed, power, and rotation of table tennis have been weakened to varying degrees, and the weakest degree of rotation is the highest. Later, through the hard research and development of major equipment manufacturers, after all kinds of fiber materials are commonly added to the bottom plate, the weakening of speed is almost negligible; after the bottom plate, including the rubber cover, is generally hardened and strengthened, the strength weakening has also been better,But only the upper limit of rotation is always difficult to breakthrough.

Therefore, the new generation of players generally emphasizes the speed-first play system. Not only the young players of the professional team but also the two most eye-catching young players in the foreign associations, Tomokazu Harimoto and Lin Yun-Ju, despite their different personalities, they all play with “speed first”. It can be described as “the world of martial arts, only fast and not broken.”

Left and right balance

In the 40mm ball era, rotation and power can still compete with the speed, but nowadays, the backhand technology system is more innate than the forehand in terms of acceleration and leverage due to its smaller movement structure, simple structure, and front shot. And due to the decrease in absolute quality, the backhand fierce change to a straight line can often be finalized in the game.

Therefore, the high-quality backhand confrontation on the left half of the table (right hand-held racket) is always the main theme in today’s table tennis competition. The side that gains an advantage in a backhand confrontation is more likely to get a chance to change in a straight line or to rush sideways, thereby turning the advantage into a winning trend. This was even more obvious in the women’s singles finals. It was Sun Yingsha who was at a disadvantage in the backhand confrontation, and she lost again and again in recent duels with Chen Meng, and her forehand advantage was always difficult to play.

The forehand seeking stability and change is also to respond to changes in speed priority and the absolute quality of the shot and make corresponding adjustments.

From a technical perspective, “super forehand” players such as Ma Long, Xu Xin, and Fang Bo stretched “spins and closes” forehands, which may become less common in the future. The more compact forehand movement of “hip crotch + fast forearm” has been commonly used by the younger generation of players and such as Fan Zhendong, Lin Gaoyuan, Liang Jingkun, etc., to better adapt to this “close”. The era of topspin in the middle stage.

In any case, due to the structure of the human body, the forehand system has inherent advantages such as more preparation time, greater adjustment space, and higher upper power limit. How to add more spin and drop point changes in a high-speed confrontation under the premise of maintaining a stable shot may be the breaking opportunity for the forehand system to continue to move forward.

Both offensive and defensive

The declining quality of shots and increasing rounds have become an irreversible development trend of table tennis. This is good for improving the excitement of table tennis, lowering the technical threshold, and increasing the attractiveness to the public, and it is more conducive to the promotion of table tennis to a wider population.

Then, from the perspective of technical and tactical development, because the quality of the shot is reduced, the probability of a sideways attacking “one-off” ball being prevented from turning back is greatly increased; the increase in rounds makes a large range of forehand single-sided attacks on the back of the table. The law is unsustainable. Therefore, the multiple rounds of offensive and defensive conversion, offensive and defensive “you have me in you, and you in me” will gradually become the new normal in the game.

In the past, we emphasized that “offensive is the best defense”, but nowadays, offensive-defensive techniques such as fast belt and reverse tear have been widely used, and even the forehand “slap” and “closed” loops commonly used by Japanese golfers Ball skills, etc., the high-quality defense will bring a lot of pressure on the offense, which Xu Xin also mentioned in the interview after the group match. One goes down and the other goes up, and the side that defends well in the game is often able to organize the offense more calmly. Not to mention the “magic skills” that directly change the rhythm of the game such as side cutting.

The above are some of my personal superficial thoughts, I welcome criticism, and corrections from my friends!

Enjoy table tennis daily
